Why is it called Women’s Day? The idea of women’s day first started in 1909 when the Socialist Party of America decided to observe it. However, between 1913 and 1917, women in Russia and Europe held rallies on and around 8 March to protest against war, demand equal rights, and participation in the economic processes. With UN recognition, March 8 is celebrated as women’s day. Who started Women’s Day? The United Nations General Assembly signed the charter on March 8, 1945, to affirm women’s empowerment and equality, thus, celebrating that day as International Women’s Day.
